LTAIG News - April 2008
“And even as we may sometimes find ourselves pitted against each other by our differing visions for the future of libraries, let’s remember that we are all working toward the same goal: superior library service for the communities we serve. History has shown that the very best way to reach a common goal is to listen to each other and find ways that we can work together. And we must especially listen to those new graduates, whose fresh ideas and perspectives will reinvent the library world of tomorrow.”
So ends “Deb’s Dissertation”, Deb Thomas’s article in the March 2008 issue of the BCLA Reporter. Thomas’s words are timely; the various constituents of the library community seem to be up in arms, often against each other. In this issue of LTAIG News, the LTAIG Committee hopes to begin a dialogue here in our own province. Are library technicians a threat to librarians? Should library staff without MLS degrees be able to call themselves librarians, or be recognized for their contributions to libraries? We look at how all these questions have been raised in the last little while, and offer an opportunity for you to sound off on the topic. See page 6 for the whole story.
Speaking of sounding off, if you plan on attending any of the upcoming library conferences in the next few months, please consider submitting a short conference report to LTAIG News. Writing down what you learned is a great way to demonstrate the value of the conference experience to your employer, and your fellow LTAIGers can benefit when you share your newfound knowledge.
And whether or not you plan on attending the CLA conference in Vancouver this year, you are invited to join the LTAIG/LTIG dinner on Thursday, May 22. Watch for details on the LTAIG website and discussion list. We hope to see you there!
