[ top ] 2008 Events May 22, 2008 "BCLA-LTAIG/CLA-LTIG Networking Social Supper " Relish the Restaurant and Lounge, 888 Nelson Street, Vancouver The 30+ people in attendance enjoyed the chance to meet and talk with library workers from across the country, including Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta. Delicious food and drink, games with prizes, a few “speeches”, lots of time to chat, and an unexpected added attraction of some well-toned individuals in work-out gear warming up for a charity run right outside the window – it was all good! Relish Restaurant in downtown Vancouver did an excellent job of coping with this decidedly “unquiet” library group. March 6, 2008 LTAIG at Langara Langara Collge, 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "Rob Golbeck participated on a panel discussion on the benefits of association membership." [top] 2007 Events May 31, 2007 " Blogs & Wikis " Terminal City Club, 837 West Hastings Street, Vancouver "Rob Golbeck participated on a panel discussion organized by the Western Canada Chapter of the Special Libraries Association. Rob discussed some how blogs, wikis and other social media are used as part of the overall knowledge management strategy at his law firm." April 21, 2007 " The Social Library: A Showcase of Web 2.0 Tools in BC and Yukon Libraries " BC Library Conference, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown, 6083 McKay Ave., Burnaby "Rob Golbeck participated on a panel discussion at the 2007 BC Library Conference. Rob's presentation gave an overview of the social software that is used at his law firm." March 8, 2007 LTAIG at Langara Langara Collge, 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "Rob Golbeck and Emma Wood participated on a panel discussion on the benefits of association membership. Rob spoke on behalf of LTAIG, and Emma spoke on behalf of the Special Libraries Association." [top] 2006 Events September 19, 2006 "Competencies for working with computers in libraries" Langara College, 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "Rob Golbeck, LTAIG's Chair & Website Administrator, spoke to a group of Lanagara Library & Information Technology students about how he uses computers in his job and volunteer work. He also talked about how he stays current with new developments in technology." March 2, 2006 LTAIG at Langara Langara Collge, 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "Rob Golbeck, LTAIG's Website Administrator spoke to Library Technician students on the benefits of association membership." April 22, 2006 Social Event at BC Library Conference Chrystal Lounge, Hilton Vancouver Metrotown 6083 McKay Ave., Burnaby On Saturday, April 22nd, 2006 16 library technicians and library tech students gathered in the Crystal Lounge at the Hilton Metrotown to drink, network and exchange trade secrets. This is the fourth year that LTAIG has organized a social event to coincide with the BCLA conference. Firehall Branch , Vancouver Public Library, 1455 West 10th Avenue, Vancouver "This event is a fun evening of indulgence! The LTAIG executive will be providing a dessert buffet of our favorite chocolate goodies, plus some non-chocolate treats, complimented by a selection of fruit and Starbucks coffee. There will be a few speakers focusing on what they love about their jobs and you'll also have a chance to see the preliminary results of the 2003 Salary Survey. This is a fundraising initiative for the Library & Information Technology (LIT) program at Langara. Tickets are $15. Please RSVP to Christina by Friday February 13th. LTAIG Email List "Send a brief message to the LTAIG discussion list telling us how you got your first library job, or if you are job hunting, tell us what your 'dream' library job would be. All entries will be entered into a draw for the new Librarian Action Figure." August 7 - September 30, 2003 2nd Annual LTAIG Reading Contest LTAIG Email List "An online contest for all Library Technicians (and students)! To enter, post a short review of a great book, article, journal, website, etc. on the LTAIG listserv. All those who post will be entered into a draw for one of three cash prizes ($50, $30 and $20), generously donated by BCLA, and reviews will be submitted to the BCLA Reporter. Enjoy a social evening, along with the opportunity to meet old friends and make new friends." April 15, 2003 Get Educated, Stay Educated Vancouver Public Library, Oakridge Branch Meeting Room "This program will give an overview of the current Library Technician programs being offered at Langara and UCFV. Hosted by LTAIG with speakers Jacqueline Bradshaw, chair of Langara's Library Technician program and Tim Atkinson, chair for the UCFV Library Technician program. Topics will include how far Library Technicians have come; what changes the programs have undergone; plans for the future of the Library Technician programs and continuing education opportunities offered by both Langara and UCFV." [top] 2002 Events May 22, 2002 Get a Job! Workshop & Social Langara College 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "There were 42 people in attendance at the LTAIG "info-social" on May 22, 2002 at Langara to hear presentations on aspects of the library job hunting process by three excellent speakers. The job hunting workshop was a resounding success! We heard from Christina Tribe, Library Technician with Campney & Murphy (now with Harper Grey Easton); Barbara Holder, Librarian at Forintek Canada Corporation; and Jane Watkins, Chief Librarian, North Vancouver City Public Library. Christina's presentation focused on getting to know your strengths and interests, researching the job market, and being professional about your job hunt. Barbara spoke on preparing for "The Big Interview", how to make the best impression on your potential employer, and tips on keeping that sometimes traumatic post-interview period, all in perspective. Jane talked about employment in a public library setting and advised that tailoring your resume and cover letter to the particular job you want can help you get short-listed. Jane also made the very important point that truly understanding what public libraries are all about, will help you stand out during the interview. July - September, 2002 Summer Reading Club LTAIG Email List "There were a number of article and book report submissions made to the LTAIG discussion list, which ran from July through September 2002. Paul Burry won the $50 prize for his review of Maxwell's Guide to Authority Work. The review was published in the October issue of the BCLA Reporter ... congratulations, Paul!" September 15, 2002 LTAIG Picnic Jericho Beach , Vancouver "About 15 people attended the informal Jericho Beach Picnic, on September 15. This was a great way to end the summer." October 25, 2002 NLC & AMICUS Information Session Langara College, 100 West 49th Ave., Vancouver "On October 25 at Langara College, approximately 70 persons attended an information session on the National Library of Canada services and the AMICUS database. NLC has many services and databases available on the web, while Amicus collections include 43 million holdings, from 1300 Canadian libraries. Amicus online has three methods of registration for ILL, and it is possible to customize your screen and change your preferences to search your favorite locations or indexes. The speaker handed out some very useful information sheets withl NLC and AMICUS Links that she kindly allowed LTAIG to post on the website. For attendees who were interested in further investigation of AMICUS, an AMICUS Practice Book was also e-mailed later." [top]
