Whether Lorna is writing about angels, aging, or Louis Armstrong’s trout sandwich, she continues to engage readers and writers across Canada and the world with her grace, wisdom and wit. She is, as Margaret Laurence wrote, “a poet to be grateful for.” she teaches and serves as Chair in the Writing Department at the University of Victoria. Her most recent book, a memoir, is Small Beneath the Sky.

Patrick Lane was born in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada, on March 26, 1939. Since he started writing in 1961, Patrick Lane has authored more than twenty books of poetry, for which he has received most of Canada's top literary awards, including the Governor General's Award, the Canadian Authors Association Award, and two National Magazine Awards. Today, his poetry appears in all major Canadian anthologies of English literature. In 2008, Patrick Lane began a new phase in his career as a major novelist with the publication of the highly acclaimed novel, Red Dog, Red Dog. Red Dog, Red Dog unfolds over the course of one week in and around a small town in the Okanagan Valley in 1958, with stories arcing back in time to the 1920s and '30s on the prairies and to the harsh life of settlers in the 1880s West.

E8b: Author Talk: Dick Cannings and Don Gayton

Sponsored by:

Location: Ramada Atrium (Off-site)
Dick Cannings was born and raised in the Okanagan Valley in a family keenly interested in natural history. This early involvement in birds, bugs and plants led him to a university education in zoology. After living away from the Okanagan for 25 years, he returned to what has always been home, and now works as a consulting biologist in Naramata. He has written five books: The Birds of the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia with brothers Sydney and Robert Cannings; British Columbia: A Natural History with Sydney Cannings, The BC Roadside Naturalist, The Birds of Southwestern British Columbia and The Rockies: a Natural History. Dick is a renowned naturalist, conservationist and international lecturer on birds and bird habitat.

Don Gayton, an ecologist, is the 2009/2010 Haig-Brown Centenary Writer in Residence at the University of Victoria and an author of non-fiction books. They include Interwoven Wild: An Ecologist Loose In the Garden, Kokanee, Landscapes of the Interior and The Wheatgrass Mechanism. His latest book is due out in May. According to Chapters, “Okanagan Odyssey is a quirky and lyrical examination of British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Sticking to the backroads and byways, Gayton gently pokes and prods local ecosystems, histories, vineyards and people. From Osoyoos in the south to Armstrong at the head of the Valley, the author revels in the biological and social diversity while sampling local wines and fruit along the way. In his unique version of wine pairing, Gayton matches up local books and landscapes with local vintages, giving terroir a whole new meaning. […] Okanagan Odyssey is not a travel guide, but represents travel writing at its idiosyncratic best.”

Light refreshments will be served.
